Hormonal (Im)balance #4 – Stress Less!

I hope last week’s post on physical activity encouraged you to be more active! I’ve been getting out for walks and light jogs on the beach now that summer’s on the way here in Australia. If you did get more exercise, I’d love to know what effect it had on your symptoms and wellbeing.

This week’s tips are around managing stress. Chronic stress adversely affects our physical, mental, emotional and even

Blue Zones: Vanilla Cherry Nice Cream

Who doesn’t love “ice cream”, especially when it’s this tasty and healthy!  Cherries are chock-full of antioxidants and cancer preventing compounds, and are anti-inflammatory, support healthy sleep (they contain melatonin ), can lower your risk of stroke and help maintain cognitive function and reduce your likelihood of developing dementia.  And bananas contain a bunch of vitamins and minerals that boost your mood, provide energy, reduce PMS, symptoms, lower blood sugar

Hormonal (Im)balance #3 – Get Moving

Last week I wrote about simple dietary changes you can make to help balance your hormones. This week we look at physical activity.

We all know exercise is good for us and makes us feel GREAT (although it can be hard to get started sometimes!). It’s a great stress-buster and mood enhancer. It boosts our metabolism and improves circulation: we feel less sluggish, have more energy, improved self esteem and confidence,

Hormonal (Im)balance #2 – Clean up your Diet

In my previous blog post I mentioned that 75% of us suffer symptoms of PMS, perimenopause and menopause, and that many women experience worse PMS symptoms as they get older (and to make matters worse, those who’ve had bad PMS often experience a worse perimenopause!).

The good news is there ARE things that you can do to balance your hormones and alleviate, and even eliminate, your symptoms, starting with simple lifestyle

Hormonal (Im)balance #1: PMS & perimenopause

I gave a talk on evidence-based ways to balance hormones last weekend and thought I’d share them with you in the coming weeks. Did you know…

More than 75% of women suffer with symptoms of PMS, perimenopause and menopause
Many women find their PMS symptoms worsen as they get older
Many women who experience bad PMS or whose PMS symptoms started early experience a worse perimenopause (yikes, double whammy!)

Fortunately, increasing numbers of health

Secrets of the world’s healthiest people: Mount Athos monks – Part 2 Lifestyle

In a previous post I wrote about the role that the Mount Athos monks’ diet is believed to play in their unusually long and healthy lives. But it’s not just food; lifestyle elements also have a crucial role to play, including lack of stress, meaningful work, physical activity and, in the monks’ case at least, celibacy.

Let’s start with exercise and physical activity. You won’t find many labour-saving devices in the

Secrets of the world’s healthiest people: Mount Athos Monks – Part 1 Diet

The Greek Orthodox monks of Mount Athos in Greece are among the healthiest people in the world.

Like the Blue Zones communities around the world they enjoy extraordinary longevity and freedom from the chronic illnesses and diseases that plague so much of the Western world, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and dementia.

So, what’s their secret?

Essentially the monks lead a very simple and austere life (more on their lifestyle in Part

What do you do just for you?

I’ve just come back from a very relaxing week in paradise (otherwise known as Fiji).

I had big plans to do some work/study/life planning by the beach, but when I got there I realised that what I wanted  – and needed – was to just take time out to relax, recharge and revitalise. So I spent quality time with my partner, snorkelled while he went diving, read several books, had a
