Essential oils can be used to quickly bring about a state of balance and calm

Essential oils do much more than smell good. Aromatherapy – the therapeutic use of aromatic plant extracts – has been used for centuries as a powerful, effective and accessible form of healing.

Aromatherapy is very effective in helping to balance hormones and to soothe, calm, relax and uplift us. Some of the most effective oils for women experiencing mood swings, stress, anxiety and other symptoms brought on my hormonal change are Clary Sage, Sage, Geranium, Fennel, Ylang Ylang, Chamomile, Lavender, Rose, Neroli and Bergomot.

It’s important to buy high quality, pure oils and not fragranced oils which have no therapeutic value.

Many suppliers make blends for specific conditions; for example, stress or balance, but you can easily make your own blends and experiment with what works best for you (it’s also fun to create new blends!).

I first started using essential oils almost 30 years ago: I would always make sure I had Peppermint oil for digestive issues and Lavender for stress/anxiety. Since then I’ve experimented and used them for so much more, including relaxation, energising, boosting memory and concentration, and, since my early forties about a decade ago, helping to balance my hormones and manage mood swings, irritability, anxiety, insomnia etc.

Here’s one of my favourite blends that works quickly to help me feel calm and balanced. I either use a diffuser or oil burner, or drop the oils onto a tissue and inhale.

  • 2 drops Clary Sage
  • 2 drops Geranium
  • 2 drops Lavender

Another blend you can try are 3 drops of Bergamot and 3 drops of Ylang Ylang to help ease anxiety, tension/anger, relieve stress and help uplift you.

There are many ways to use essential oils: in a warm bath, an oil burner or diffuser, added to massage oil or a few drops on a tissue to breathe deeply. If you’re using oils in the bath make sure you mix them in well with the water.

A word of caution: Essential oils are wonderful for everyday use but there are cautions. They should not be used internally or apply undiluted to the skin without consultation with an experienced aromatherapist. It’s also important to understand that some essential oils can have side effects and contraindications. A good place to find information is:

Note: You can purchase quality essential oils from many health foods shops and online. You can also purchase DoTERRA essential oils through my DoTERRA website (you can also find out more about their oils) at 25% off the retail price by creating your own account (click “Join and Save).  If you join my Connect Inspire Flourish coaching program you’ll get a lovely essential oil specific to your needs e.g. Clary Calm, Balance, or Lavender Peace – I’ve found that all of these blends can help with perimenopause symptoms.
